A British Gibraltar Is in the Interest of the United States - GIBRALTAR Y LA FUNDACIÓN HERITAGE DEL LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DE NORTE AMÉRICA

The British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula might be small in landmass and population, but its geopolitical importance is great. Situated in a strategic location near the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar has played an important role throughout regional history. Thanks to the access to British military bases that the United States enjoys because of the Anglo-American Special Relationship, Gibraltar has been used by the U.S. Navy many times since American ships first entered its harbor during the Barbary Wars of 1801-1805. Gibraltar has been British since 1704 and today has a population of 30,000 -- a majority of whom are British citizens. The principle of self-determination remains more important than ever as Spain continues to claim Gibraltar as their own.

I would like to point out that just 70 nautical miles from Gibraltar, is Naval Station Rota in Spain, that the US Navy has been using for more than 60 years. Naval Station Rota is one of the largest American military communities in Europe and houses US Navy and US Marine Corps personnel and their families. There are also small US Army and US Air Force contingents on the base. In adition, several US Navy Aegis destroyers are deployed permanently to Naval Station Rota as part of the Missile Defense System of NATO. There is really no need for US Navy warships to go to Gibraltar at all.?
